Mismatch

Had quite a productive day today, woke up early (11:30 am early - Yes, I think it's early) to go pay for more of the things I've been shopping for online (thank goodness for online shopping! Shopping with the comfort of being in your own home!) then had coffee at Starbucks, temple drive with AJ. Aya couldn't make it for reasons I can't be too sure of.

AJ and I were discussing the relationship that our friend, BOY, has recently entered and what our thoughts about it were. Most of you don't know that Aya, AJ, and myself have been getting together more frequently these days to discuss the idiocy of their situation. We've all come to the conclusion that more than anything, this was just a case of being mismatched. We really can't say that GIRL is not a nice person - she may have questionable morals, but she is not evil. In fact, she's been nothing but warm to us. And we also can't say that BOY is stupid - he's actually one of the most intelligent people I know.

People always hear that opposites attract. It's the balance of nature. Yin and Yang. Black and White. The Jock and the Nerd. The straight-laced boy will fall for the free-spirited girl. Personally, I don't believe in that. I think that this is just what people want to hear - they want to hear epic stories of a love bigger than themselves, a love written in the stars that nothing can prevent them from being together. They want to hear pretty stories, but the truth is far from being pretty. Society binds us to certain rules, and we are raised and bred to uphold certain standards and conducts of behavior. This might not be ideal, but this is the world we live in. Opposites do not always attract each other, though there are of course, certain exceptions. 2 people can't be together if they don't share the same beliefs. Fuck compromise. Not everything in the world can be compromised. A boy who was reared as part of the crème de la crème of families will not fall in love with the girl from the wrong side of the tracks. How will he introduce her to his family without making a big fool of himself? How will he introduce her without making a big fool of her? It's just the way it is. It's not about snobbery and it's most certainly not about elitism.

The problem here, you see, is that we are raised to believe that love can overcome anything. From the minute we start noticing the opposite sex, we are told that fate will play it's natural course. That there is one person in the world we are meant to be with and that we will live happily ever after. What they forget to tell us is that love, like everything good in the world, is difficult and has to be worked on. It's not always rainbows and butterflies. We see perfect stories of people from different walks of life falling in love. We are so blind sighted by this that we forget that relationships aren't just about the 2 people involved. If a boy fell in love with a girl whom his family disapproves of, and with good reason, would being happy for the moment be enough for him? Would he be willing, for that brief moment of happiness, to give up people who only want the best for him? People who aren't willing to see him get hurt? Is love enough to make someone forget their past and create a different future?

It's not even about money. I'm not just talking about a rich boy, poor girl situation. It's more about how very differently these 2 people conduct themselves in private and in public. The rich boy, poor girl (or vice versa) situation happens a lot more than you'd think. I'm talking about breeding. How such a stand-up young man like BOY would ever fall in love with someone like her. Someone who can't tell the difference between "There, their, and they're" or "Your and you're". Someone who would rather bare skin than dress appropriately. Someone who would call all of her acquaintances "bitch" or "slut" or any other offensive word. Someone who doens't respect "alone time" and would rather have legions of men panting after her 24/7. Most of the time, the men in the relationship don't see this - but the bystanders do. His friends, his family, they all see this. But he refuses to listen. All he does is hope he's wrong, and when she does something that proves she's no good, he ignores it. And then everytime she comes through and suprises him, she wins him over, and he loses the arguement with himself that she's no good for him.

This is the type of girl that annoys the shit out of me. Those who try to fit into a certain mold that is just not right for them. They try so hard and come out short. Those who use analogies they can't explain. Those who pretend to love books, but has never actually finished one. Those who desperately try to sound intelligent yet errs again and again because they don't know how to use the highfalluting words they seem so fond of using. The pretentious ones. Those who feel like they know everything about the world.

It's not that we're against them being together. It's just that things happened so fast and she's already got him whipped. She, who never thinks twice before doing something stupid. She, who is in love with the idea of being in a relationship, but doesn't really love the one she's in a relationship with. She, who has never treated him right. Ever. She, who unknowingly makes him feel like shit. She, who is rich yet does not even come close to having class. She, who measures him up to all those leading men she's fallen in love with.

Damn. This post makes me sound so misogynistic. But really, I'm not. I just can't help but notice that a lot of girls can no longer be called ladies.

Really though, you can't fit a square peg in a round hole.
