Interesting topics, a blank canvas, a wide vocabulary, and possibly the use of a thesaurus does not a writer make.
A writer must be able to create an alternate reality, they must have the ability to weave words into captivating sentences. A writer should not just inform, they should story tell. A writer must be able to create adventure. They must make you laugh, cry, and fall in love along with them. You must empathize and sympathize with the story.
Writing should not be all about escapism. While there are many elements of escapism in writing, one should also be able to undergo catharsis. It's about self-deprecation and the ability to find humor in the strangest of things and the weirdest of situations. It's about putting yourself in someone else's shoes, and looking for the perfect reaction -- a gasp, a shrug, a giggle. It's all part of ourselves. And with everything that we write, we put a little bit of us in it.
Writing is an art. It's a medium. It's ourselves.
To be able to write well, you must write what you know.
This is what I know.
Annoyed,
Essa
